In whose bed is the General Workers Union sleeping?

Well, I suppose that’s a rhetorical question, really. Compare the reaction of Tony Zarb’s outfit to the statements of unequivocal condemnation (and praise for the media’s role in exposing these issues) released by the Malta Employers Association, the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Enterprise, and the Union Haddiema Maghqudin.

The GWU insists that its people saw no abuse (they wouldn’t, would they) and urges the company’s management to react to the media reports.

Honestly.

Can you imagine an indentured labourer from China, who doesn’t speak English and who was raised in a culture of fear of the police and the authorities, here without a passport, being put in a situation where she is questioned by the police?

“Everything very fine, sir.”

Am I surprised? Pity GWU don’t have 007 amongst them to investigate the case.

The three monkey logo should be the official registered logo for the Leisure Clothing brand.

That or a cat carrying a tongue which is also very appropriate for the new coat of arms of all those who nitpicked every single thing pre March 2013.

But now everyone is super happy in Malta because if not we have been instructed not to complain and under no circumstances are we to tell the media.

    • Len says:

No abuse seen? ”The GWU never witnessed any workers being abused”, what a stupid statement issued by GWU.

GWU also said that it will continue follow the case closely, thanks to GWU we are assured that there will be no flogging.

GWU should know that employees work for the money, they should investigate whether they were paid less than the statutory minimum wage?

Every company is obliged to send FS3 and FS7 on a yearly basis. Such FS5, FS3 and FS7 reconciliation returns should be audited by the auditors of the company. This simple procedure together with checking whether all employees were registered with ETC is enough to investigate any irregularities.

The GWU was and still is in bed with the Labour Party. No doubt about that.

The GWU sold its soul to Mintoff and the Midget is still holding them by the balls even from Hades.

Why did the Chinese ambassador go to plead with the Nazzjon not to publish its findings?

  7. David J Camilleri says:

Oh Tony forgot his verbal attacks on “xoghol prekarjat” way back in December 2012 before the elections! Shame on you Tony!

    Evlything vely fijn, sel.

But seriously can someone explain how Joe Cini was involved.

He used to be very prominent when Leisure Clothing was still at Corradino.

  9. Edward says:

I thought the GWU was funded by the Chinese.

  10. Need one ask the question in the title? The General Workers Union has always slept in the same bed as the Malta Labour Party, and when persons like Reggie Miller and Joe Attard Kingswell sought to be more independent they were kicked out.
The workers they were supposed to protect were used as pawns.

  11. M says:

I would like to compare what Whistles said when they discovered that the T-shirts they sold might have been produced in a sweatshop to what Bortex said. Wait, what DID Bortex say?

Whistles has released a statement saying the company is “shocked” by the claims and that an investigation will be carried out.

“The allegations regarding the production of T-shirts in the CMT factory in Mauritius are extremely serious and we are investigating them as a matter of urgency,” the statement said.

“We are committed to ensuring that our products are safe for consumers’ use and manufactured under safe, fair and humane working conditions.”

  12. Natalie Mallett says:

No worker should trust the General Workers Union and should with immediate effect cancel their affiliation with this union. They were always dumb and deaf during the times of Labour government.
