Last Friday, President Maria Goretti Preca paid a visit to a charity event at the Dragonara Palace Hotel, attended almost entirely by women and children.
Yet she was swarming with protection officers. Protection from what, exactly?
The worse that could have happened was someone treading on her toes in a display of exuberance, since the event was a Zumba masterclass in aid of L-Istrina.
Looking back now, the only ones needing protection were probably those attending the event in good faith. If her driver carries a weapon, these undesirables most certainly do as well.

The interesting part is that all of this (except in the case of the PM) seems to have cropped up lately.
I was at an event organised by Europa Donna as part of October Breast Awareness month, and the President was there accompanied only by her acting ADC, a woman.
There were no security personnel around, at least not in the Phoenicia ballroom. The prime minister’s wife was there too, and she was only accompanied by her private secretary. She mingled freely with the guests. And again no security personnel at all.
So what has happened this past month? Has it got to do with Leisure Clothing or with the presence of certain Libyans in Malta? Has the passport sale or the refusal of some, resulted in threats?
I read that Maria Gotti
What a waste of taxpayers’ money.
Majtazwel have placed that Dyer woman in the position.
It would have had the same effect and results.
Why wasn’t the president wearing the official Fan Run top?
No need to ask same question of the prime minister and to his wife, Mrs Smiles Bla Forma.
