Where’s the Law Commissioner when you need him to spare a cent for a poor lady

Franco Debono’s most dedicated admirer, Ruth Dyer (though there’s an Annie Adams who’s catching up fast) is right now begging for alms at City Gate, saying that it’s all for poor, wee abandoned dogs.
The Law Commissioner, a dedicated reader of this website, might wish to rip himself away from his espresso u toast bit-tonn and rush up there with a couple of euros.
A man like that needs every fan he can get, even if she has none of the qualities of Mrs Austin Gatt.

Everybody knows what ‘dirt’ he is seen around with, and everybody laughs behind his back. If he truly wants a woman like Mrs Austin Gatt, he has gone about things completely the wrong way.
Din il-mara lussu ghal Frankie.
Despite the propaganda, I don’t think Frankie is much interested in women. Men with that level of fixation on little caged birds tend to be weird about women. It’s like with train sets.
Last year we were sitting outside a cafe in Valletta together with another couple, friends of ours who were visiting Malta for the first time.
All of a sudden, Ruth Dyer appeared out of nowhere holding a piece of paper and asked us (impolitely) to give a donation for some dog shelter.
When my husband replied in very simple English, which I had to repeat again in Maltese because she did not understand a word, that we do not give money donations to individuals collecting on the streets, she gave us a look as if she wanted to strangle us and disappeared without saying another word.
Our friends were left speechless, especially as five minutes earlier the waitress had slammed the tray containing our coffees on the table, spilling half the contents in the process.
Of course! Sometimes you need a shove to make the connection.
This person has been doing the animal-charity rounds for ages now. I remember her coming into my local drinkery months ago on a lunchtime, wooing the old boys in there with her mask-like made-up smile and being VERY familiar.
I think she was giving out booklets of some description to any takers.
She’s also a fixture in Cirkewwa and on the Gozo ferry.
