As I said, the retired judges should have resigned from this inquiry

Published: December 8, 2014 at 10:44pm

There is no way they could have had all the information as it is still coming out as we speak. They allowed themselves to be used as a buffer-board for the prime minister in his weakness and his inability to take difficult decisions (to say nothing of his fear of Manuel Mallia).

And there we have it. Strong with the weak and weak with the strong, and now a cover-up by the retired judges. Bla bajd.

    • Salvu Felice Pace says:

What happened to Muscat’s statement yesterday that he will act without fear or favour?

What a star candidate Mallia has turned out to be.

However Mallia has done us all a favour in proving that some of us were right all along.

Labour has not changed. Muscat himself is all talk and no substance.

I wonder what deal is Mallia contemplating before deciding his own fate?

    • Xejn Sew says:

Our PM and his team had no qualms about trying to bamboozle the entire Maltese population, let alone three retired judges.

  2. ghalgolhajt.com says:

I’m sure Joseph Muscat’s decision to ask Manwel to resign is coming from the recordings that have come out and not from the report although the report contains the transcripts. We still have to see if all the transcripts have been passed on to the retired judges.

  3. Pajsu says:

Wonder of wonders. Kurt is off the hook. And let us not forget. Kurt is guilty = our Prime Minister is guilty.

A charade of an inquiry that only managed to conclude what was glaringly obvious and did not have the balls to properly and seriously INQUIRE in any depth beyond that.

  4. canon says:

The inquiry by the three retired judges was an other cover up to prevent the discovery of the real authors of the original cover up.

  5. Natalie Mallett says:

This press conference was as exciting as the one where he announced the 2 cents drop in the price of petrol.

  6. verita says:

The Prime Minister has admitted that there was a cover-up just as the PN media and Nationalist Party have been saying all along.

What a pathetic Prime Minister who wants Mallia to resign and yet does not have the courage to enforce it.

  7. Mila says:

The inquiry was just an aid to find the way of the least political damage.

How many will recognize the prime minister for the coward that he is?

  8. Edward says:

Perhaps we should all remember that this was the man who walked out of parliament crying, yes crying, claiming that he had experienced one of Malta’s darkest days for democracy. This man knows no shame.

  9. Joey has no balls says:

    Most unprofessional government ever.

  10. Pablo says:

Normal ordinary people have heard the recordings and are just as competent to arrive at a well founded conclusion that the cover up implicates Mallia, Scerri, Zammit and Kurt.

There is also a strong suspicion of Muscat being aware of it.

Three ex judges are not better qualified than ordinary honest people.

  11. ciccio says:

Did I just hear Jason Azzopardi read out on NET an extract from the Inquiry report which says that Silvio Scerri did not know who GM 14 belonged to?

And after all this, we will be expecting a cabinet reshuffle.

Who will protect Sheehan and Gabriel Michallef now?

What happened to Smith – will someone drag him to some witness stand? We want to listen to his version of the sequence of events.

  14. Henry James says:

Ray Zammit has gone back to being Assistant Police Commissioner. Hekk ghal-lanqas ma jitlifx il-penzjoni tas-servizz, miskin.

  15. edgar says:

Muscat showed how Mallia has a hold over him and all this when Muscat has a 9-seat majority in parliament. Imagine how weak he would have been with only one seat majority.

    • anna caruana says:

No need to imagine – PN’s last term in office is very fresh in our memory.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m glad to see Mallia go.

  16. Frame me up says:

Wouldn’t we all like to know how much this poxy inquiry cost us? Ghax kulhadd irid jahdem hux hekk.

The letter was written by Mallia. It speaks of “illicit” behaviour. Which is totally different from political responsibility.

  18. J Mallia says:

Check out the report, Daphne – in a single swoop the judges destroyed any prospects of reusing the “meritokrazija” cry. Give page 11 a look. No wonder the prime minister appeared livid.

  19. Mike says:

So the PM claims that the inquiry was done so that the facts are scrutinised and dealt with in the most transparent and fair manner.

Now that we have the results of this ‘inquiry’ can we challenge Muscat to table the report, in its full and unaltered form, along with all the evidence made available to the ex judges to be able to come to their conclusions in parliament?

  20. kapxinn says:

    From Malta Today:

Head of government communications Kurt Farrugia was found to have acted correctly in his work and this was corroborated by the evidence presented.

The inquiry found that when both Farrugia and Mallia’s communications coordinator Ramona Attard were informed that the car had in fact been shot at, Attard called Mallia to immediately publish a correction of the original statement.

Mallia however replied that “we should first establish the facts and issue everything once the facts are clear”.

The board of inquiry did not ask Kurt whether he had informed his boss that night. So we’ll never know.

  21. Mike farrugia says:

    Too little too late.

  22. Pajsu says:

  23. curious says:

Forgive me for asking but are we absolving the former judges here? This is a genuine question.

From out here with only the media for information, we have a rather good idea what happened and we can safely say that there is a political responsibility to be shouldered. So how come the judges reached a different conclusion?

I also do not agree that the heat and pressure are taken off Muscat. He and his sidekick Farrugia are responsible as much as Mallia is. In fact that is the problem. If he sacks Mallia he should resign himself.

  24. Dave says:

From the report: Keith Schembri called Silvio Scerri to check whose car GM14 is. Silvio said he would check and call back.

    Pull the other one.

    • mister says:

That’s only an excuse to justify on record the log of a phone call which was made to each other. Actually 2 as he probably returned the call.

  25. kapxinn says:

While the commissioner, Silvio Scerri and the minister knew that the Department of Information release contained a lie, it seems Kurt Farrugia, Ramona Attard and the PM only realised this after it had been released.

Of these latter three only one could have ordered a retraction.

  26. Macduff says:

So many people this sorry excuse of a man (let alone prime minister) cut a deal with and is now afraid of: John Dalli, Manual Mallia, the Chinese ambassador and those two loonies, JPOS and Franco Debono.
