Supplier of billboards for Labour election campaign named Malta’s ambassador to Azerbaijan

Published: December 15, 2014 at 8:49pm

John Debono, whose company supplied billboards to the Labour Party for its general election campaign, has been made Malta’s ambassador to Azerbaijan.

He is already Malta’s ambassador to Ukraine.

He presented his credentials to the dictator, President Aliyev, two and a half weeks ago. The appointment was announced on an Azerbaijan news portal. The Department of Information has not named Debono as a member of the Maltese government delegation currently in Azerbaijan, but it is unthinkable that the ambassador would not be part of that delegation.

Sometimes I get the feeling we’ve been stitched up by everyone including the British and Americans.

  2. Max Cavalera says:

There is a very close circle of “top businessmen” who are directly financing the PL, the so-called klikka. They call the shots. As time goes by and the next election gets closer, this klikka will also start courting the PN.

Excuse me, but isn’t that Il-Gandhi, whose father owned some blow-moulding company in Mriehel or thereabouts? What’s he doing sniffing Labour’s bum?

Billboard suppliers, travel agents and ‘varjeta’ comperes. Exactly what our diplomatic corps needs.

After reading for a first degree, most probably a masters degree and an entrance exam to join to diplomatic corps it must be truly heartening to see this riff-raff take the top diplomatic jobs.

If I was serving in a Maltese representation abroad after having put in countless hours of study to earn a job within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs I’d be doing my damnedest to stay away from sharp and pointed objects right now as I suspect the temptation would be too great.

Come on Chef, you should know the PN appointed a school corridor supervisor as Malta’s resident ambassador to Ireland, on the wink from someone at San Anton Palace.

Chef, if you know anything about our diplomatic corps, as you seem to do, you’ll be aware of the sorry state it finds itself in due to partisan interests and neglect.

It is very sad to see that once dignified institution the subject of a constant haemorrhage over the past 10 years.

John Debono is also a non-resident ambassador to Kazakhstan,.

Why did he accompany NEXIA BT on its ‘sale of Maltese citizenship’ business trip to Kazakhstan earlier this year?

What are his connection to Edward Zammit Lewis?

Why was he not present for this Maltese government meeting in Baku?

  7. Tony Borg says:

This chap also employs Marc Vella Bonnici, Labour’s useless International Secretary.

I still remember one day of swearing and shouting following a phone call from Keith Schembri Il-Kasco asking him to employ Vella Bonnici on a part-time basis because Labour couldn’t have its international secretary on the unemployed list.

    • Il-Bambin Jitlob Ghalina says:

Are the Vella Bonnicis a family of freeloading bums who can’t make it without a crutch from Labour cronies?

His father Joe has been put on the public payroll as ‘chief of Identity Malta’ and his cousin Alessandra Pace (mother is Vella Bonnici) has been put on the public payroll too as communications officer for CHOGM 2015 with Phyllis Muscat.

      • Mulej Hudni says:

Correct – Alessandra Pace is also daughter of Capt. Charles Pace know as “Kangaroo Jackie” within Labour ranks because of his hopping from one post to another.

There Alessandra goes again, using her family’s connection to Labour while remaining the useless person she has always been. I still remember the problems she caused Louis Grech when she worked in Brussels, and the clashes she used to have with his Bulgarian assistant.

      • Bully Beef says:

Captain Charles Kangaroo Pace, Alessandra ‘Malta Tieghi, Malta Tieghek’ Pace’s father, first applied for early retirement from Air Malta under the old pay basic monthly salary scheme.

When his mate Captain Dominic ‘I am late at the gate’ Azzopardi (married to Super One’s Simone Cini) negotiated a new Eur500,000 tax-free payout scheme, he became interested and managed to get the payout too.

He then became the flight safety manager for a Kazakh-owned, Swiss-managed flight safety company called Comlux.

He was not happy there and his eyes were set on a directorship role at Transport Malta Civil Aviation Directorate. His only problem was that he couldn’t work for them as rules prohibit early retirement takers to work for a government entity.

Of course, Charles managed to change the rules and got his EUR100,000 a year post at Transport Malta as deputy director. Malta Taghna Lkoll.

If I recall well, this guy had said that he was supporting Labour with billboards because the (Nationalist) government had refused to grant his mother-in-law a visa.

  9. Daniel Brincat says:

Why had a first secretary accompanied John Debono to Astana on direct orders “from above”? Is he also not trusted with his credentials to Astana?

  10. Wheels within wheels says:

What assurances do we have that John Debono does not use his diplomatic position to further his business interests?
