A Gzira lido – are they insane?

Published: January 14, 2015 at 10:53am

The water in that creek is filthy year round because there is little circulation, and during the summer months, when the lido will be used, it verges on stagnant.

And what – more and more restaurants? These islands are packed with restaurants and most of them are lousy. Instead of improving standards in existing restaurants we increase the supply of bad restaurants.

    They must be joking!

  2. wacko says:

Nice. It’s a little stroll from the yacht to the Orpheum and back.

  3. tinnat says:

So right. Is this a ploy to “dilute” Sliema?

    • Iz-Zanzi says:

Mate, the beach lidos around Sliema are already diluted with some right characters.

I think the events are called ‘Champagne Wars’ or something and during the summer months it is like Jersey Shore with pastizzi.

What they need to do with Gzira is firstly reconfigure the public crossing around the petrol station because it’s just too dangerous walk safely.

Secondly, the stretch of restaurants which are opposite the proposed lido occupy too much of the public pavement space. It’s as if you’re walking through the restaurants themselves and it’s not a exactly a pleasant experience.

Actually if they did get away with a building a lido in Gzira, the Sliema Shore bunch can piss off there.

Thank you – exactly my thoughts.

I’d love to know whether the applicants have some direct link with the Taghna Lkoll powers that are at MEPA. It would explain how on earth this project was approved.

    • Respect says:

These hotels have tried several times to get this approved under the Nationalist government and never succeeded.

    A 2-metre wide footpath.

Imagine being stuck behind the Fat Controller.

  9. Wilson says:

They just forgot that the Gzira drainage system overflows into this area in summer, every summer. Obviously in the EIA that will not be a problem.

  10. H.P. Baxxter says:

You lot are always whining. Thalassotherapy, my dears! Spread the fine Mediterranean muck over Ritienne’s broad shoulders, turn her over and do the chebs, savour the aroma of fermenting sediment and let the searing sun caress your hairy nipples, as the morning traffic lurches two feet above your head, belching all manner of aromatic vapours and you inhale deeply. The Maltese Riviera, my dears!

  11. hmm says:

Oh for heaven’s sake, it is an excuse to build a new club. Yet another Medasia ‘Playa’. As if we don’t have enough clubs on the island, they want to hog the space before Manoel island development takes off.

  12. Enrico Lapira says:

The owners of the Bayview Hotel and Apartments want more and more everyday.

  13. M. Borg says:

Bad idea. The land reclamation / construction will be an environmental nightmare with tons of fine construction dust released into the poorly circulated creek.

And when it’s built, where the hell will all the patrons park? Like the area isn’t congested enough!

  14. anthony says:

I cannot yet figure out which stinks more.

Whether it is the corruption surrounding this scandalous project or the sea in the creek.

  15. Banana republic ... again says:

Is the green water in the photo montage intentional?

  16. curious says:

This is insane. Will this be copied all along the Gzira/Sliema seafront?

Once the first permit is issued other applicants will quote it as a precedent in a court of law or at a MEPA board. It has happened with other areas.

  17. Persil says:

So this is Taghna Lkoll Malta.

The pavement on the opposite side has been taken up by restaurants, and now the seashore is going to be given up as well.

And we, the tax-paying citizens? Not that this part of Grira has much to offer.

In summer it is full of people and it is suffocating. Imagine when the lido is operating.

Why don’t we hold a protest march and gather signatures, start a court case?

This government is doing far too much to accommodate the big shots.

  18. Giovanna tal pepe says:

Yes, it’s probably an excuse to build a noisy late-hour club. The people of GZIRA should protest, as it’s over saturated with pubs and restaurants.

  19. GAETANO PACE says:

Frankly and honestly, Daphne, when I read posts as these my first reaction is that you are in a lighter mood, trying to draw us into commenting about the topic in a way that makes light of it.

But then going through the post and the ensuing comments I end up telling myself that we must be either be living in the world of the absurd, the ridiculous, the unimaginable, the unthinkable or else in a deranged Utopia.

  20. QahbuMalti says:

The Pacevillification of Gzira with cesspits and toilets. Cannot wait for the Medasia Playa Gzira version with its VIP and VVIP and VVVIP sections for the hamallu crowd.

  21. Martin Felice says:

Perhaps this is the first step imposed by that idiot Zammit Lewis to attract “high quality ” tourists.
