The European Council on Foreign Relations has released a report which names Malta as the EU member state least inclined to speak out or act against China’s human rights violations.

Germany, Ireland and Sweden were the most outspoken.

In this report, called A Power Audit of EU-China Relations, the European Council on Foreign Relations says that Malta is one of a group of “accommodatng mercantilists” which have prevented the European Union from dealing with China more assertively on Tibet, human rights and other serious matters, placing commercial interests ahead of human rights considerations. This has “often kept the EU from developing a more assertive stance on issues like Tibet or human rights”, the report says.

The report notes specifically that Malta wants to lift the EU arms embargo against China and that there is no lobby in Malta on human rights issues related to China.

Perhaps the Bishops’ Conference should take the lead here. It the state and its pro-China lackeys (including Dr Busuttil’s Party) will not speak up for the oppressed of China, the Maltese Church should do so.

There are many Chinese catholic bishops and religious in Chinese jails – that should warrant a whimper of protest from the local Curia.

Yes, and when the bishop opens his mouth to speak about this matter there will be an avalanche of abuse telling him to return to the sacristy.

Some want the Catholic Church and the bishop in particular to be a ventriloquist’s puppet that moves its lips only when its handler wants it to.

Let the bishop get on with his job while you get on with yours. He is intelligent enough.
