More Supermarkets update: Darren Casha of Medasia has done a runner, too

Ryan Schembri’s involvement in the More Supermarkets debt debacle has been well documented in the media. But now Darren Casha (Medasia), who got involved in the supermarket business after Schembri fled, has done a runner, too.

Darren Casha is better known for his operations at Medasia in Gzira and Medasia Playa, favourite watering-holes of the Taghna Lkoll ‘Tashkent style’ crowd.

For the last few weeks I have been receiving anonymous information telling me that Casha has fled Malta because of his pile of debts – and other reasons which needn’t be detailed here for now – but I was unable to verify that.

But as I was reading Times of Malta’s print (digital) edition just now, I came across a notice in the classified advertising pages, in which one of Casha’s creditors – a wines and spirits company that is owed around Eur35,000 for drinks supplied to Casha’s Smart City pub, The Londoner, and to Medasia in Gzira, is calling for the appointment of curators to represent Casha in the case it has filed against him.

This is only done when the person being sued has left the country and cannot be traced. The case proceeds with the absentee individual represented by curators who have come forward of their own volition or, if nobody comes forward, by curators appointed by the court.

This in a civil case, not a prosecution. In criminal trials/prosecutions, the proceedings must always take place in the presence of the accused.
