Swieqi Council was not responsible for the Pay Attention To The Hedgehog/Porcupine/Beaver signs

Published: February 6, 2015 at 2:16am

I have received the following email, which I reproduce with permission.

Dear Mrs Caruana Galizia

I hope this email finds you in good health.

I was directed to your blog post “Swieqi Council says: PAY ATTENTION TO HEDGEHOG”. I double checked and I can confirm that the signs were erected by the Central Government and not by the Swieqi Local Council. The Executive Secretary has confirmed that the Council was not asked to vet the signs – nor was the Council told that the signs would be erected in the first place.

I can assure the general public that the Swieqi Local Council has a good command of both official languages and will thus remedy the amateurish use of language that third parties have decided to showcase in our locality.

Regards

Dr Justin Fenech
Deputy Mayor
Swieqi Local Council

I find it funny that both maltatoday and times of malta report that Miriam Dalli was nominated for best new MEP and no one bothers to check the whole list.

The whole list includes Roberta Metsola. She too is nominated for an award in her field.

Who was drunk? The person who created that porcupine/beaver, the person who put up the sign or the one who drove into it?

    • Mila says:

Perhaps the person who drove into it was laughing so hard at the sign’s stupidity that s/he lost control of the car.

  3. T.P. says:

Hedgehog giving tuition to all who care in Swieqi.

  4. Candy says:

So it was those jokers in Beijing.

  5. Tarzan says:

So the embarrassing sign was not put up by the Local Council but by the central government.

That makes it even more embarrassing.

  6. Lizz says:

It’s the law: clean up after your hedgehog.

  7. Josef says:

What is it with this government? Are they trying to show us that they had their ‘experts’ tucked away somewhere for many years, and pulled them all out after March 2013? (No wonder they were hidden before that.)

Fejn ma tifmhux staqsu! Nobody is going to look down on you if you ask. It’s much better than making fools out of yourselves (which seems to be the order of the day lately)!

  8. Mandy says:

I thought as much. The Swieqi mayor is Noel Muscat, who definitely knows better than to authorise such road signs.

  9. Artemis says:

“Vet the signs”. Now there’s an idea, maybe a vet should be consulted before any more signs are displayed.

  10. Francis Saliba M.D. says:

    That explains everything.

If the Hon Minister for the environment in our central government cannot distinguish between birds and mammals he should not be expected to be able to distinguish one mammal from another.

Amazing how Labour can never get it right on hedging’, be it oil or hogs.

Well, well. Tsk, tsk Mr Central Government. But, meanwhile, we would have done nothing about it unless somebody took a photo and sent it to Daphne.

  13. Louis says:

It is not a hedgehog, looks more like a porcupine.

  14. ken il malti says:

One can learn a lot from a hedgehog.

  15. Gahan says:

If the sign reads “Kunsill Lokali Swieqi” it must have been erected by the Swieqi local council.

If not, than the council must order whoever placed the signs to remove them from the poles which are the council’s property.

BTW, “Qanfud” has sexual connotations like “beaver” does in the English language.
