No marriage certificate for Manuel Mallia and Codruta Cristian at Public Registry
Today’s newspaper story that the Department of Health has been pursuing the mother of Manuel Mallia’s children, Codruta Cristian, since 2009 to pay around 3,000 euros for using the services of Mater Dei Hospital, has inadvertently revealed that they are not married despite pretending to be.
They encourage the fraud by calling themselves ‘Dr and Mrs Mallia’ and by Codruta Cristian calling herself Codruta Mallia on Facebook and wherever else she can.
In all Labour Party and government communications, she is referred to as the (ex) minister’s wife, and newspaper stories describe her that way.
Manuel Mallia might have been unable to marry Ms Cristian before the enactment of divorce legislation in 2011, because he was married already.
His marriage broke down around 30 years ago, but it doesn’t follow that it was necessarily declared null. Since the divorce law three and a half years ago, however, there has been no excuse for the perpetration of this fraud on the electorate.
I’ve just remembered that last year, when the matter was brought up on this website, an application was made via the proper channels at the Public Registry (it’s very straightforward; you do it on line) to buy a copy of the marriage certificate of Emanuel Mallia (ID 0095152M) and Elana Codruta Cristian (ID 0044936A). It wasn’t available.
Perhaps Manuel Mallia, given that he is still a member of parliament even if he is no longer the Police and Army Minister and the minister responsible for identity cards, would like to clear up this not-insignificant matter and tell us once and for all whether he really is married or only just faking it.
Maybe the reason there is no marriage certificate at the Public Registry in Malta is that they were married in Romania after the 2011 watershed divorce law.
I really have no idea why somebody would want or need to pretend to be married when they are not. Social convention? I thought we were liberal and progressive.
He should also explain why, back in December 2008, he took the mother of his children to the state hospital and tried to get free healthcare for her even though – as it turns out from the bill the Health Department issued – she was not entitled to it because they were not married at the time.
Why didn’t the stingy so-and-so take her to a private hospital? And I say ‘take her’ advisedly.
