Top comment: “Simon Busuttil is the only person who will stand between us and another five years of this crap”

Simon Busuttil may be quiet, but that is not always evidence of weakness.
A weak man would have been broken by the terrible hand that he has been dealt since the election, but he seems as determined as ever to overcome the horrible odds stacked against him, and has begun to make headway.
One of the obstacles in his path is that we have all become so cynical, so disappointed and so plain fed-up of our political class, perhaps with good reason, that many are not really ready to give him a chance.
He has made mistakes, as has every new leader on the way to forging their own identity. I was glad to hear him say that he regrets the abstention on civil marriage.
But he has one thing that vanishingly few politicians have – his integrity is beyond question, and he has a set of human, European values that are not up for debate.
Just as importantly, come 2018, Simon Busuttil is the only person who will stand between us and another five years of this crap. We can either continue sniping at him and criticising from the comfort of our armchairs, or we can try and pull together and rally behind him.
If he fails, he will face the consequences with rest of us, but for goodness sake let’s give it our best shot.
By all means, let us criticise when we must, because that is what helps keep our politicians on their toes, and because thankfully we have critical faculties. But let us do it constructively, in a way that maximises our chances of saving the country from another five years of collapsing standards, mercenary values, and, soon, an economy that will start running out of steam.
