"I'm hiding behind Louis in case a terrorist attacks in the Mediterranean." Incidentally, has anyone sighted the deputy PM recently? He's been AWOL for around two years now.

“I’m hiding behind Louis in case a terrorist attacks in the Mediterranean.” Incidentally, has anyone sighted the deputy PM recently? He’s been AWOL for around two years now.

From The Malta Independent’s report of the Labour leader’s speech out on the hustings in Hal Safi:

Beginning his speech, Dr Muscat mentioned the attack on tourists visiting a museum in Tunisia. “In the name of the government and the Maltese people, we express our solidarity,” he said, adding “we are against terrorism in the Mediterranean”.

Oh, jolly good. Nice to know they’re against terrorism. Even nicer to know that they’re against terrorism in the Mediterranean because we live here, though they’re not as bothered by terrorism elsewhere, because we don’t.

Looks like Muscat learned his lesson of four years ago, when revolution broke out in Tunisia, it was easy to predict the inevitable fire that would sweep across the border, but instead of acknowledging the seriousness of the situation (because, presumably, he had failed to grasp it) he stood up in parliament and said that in Lawrence Gonzi’s position he would have given instructions for a massive marketing campaign to pull tourism business away from our revolution-torn competitor.

He didn’t say anything so tacky, stupid and shallow this time, but still he got it wrong.

How do you feel about terrorism in Norway, Dr Muscat? Or terrorism in Ukraine?
