Hundreds of people were locked in the hold of the boat that went down

Survivors of this weekend’s terrible tragedy, in which hundreds of people drowned when the overcrowded fishing-boat on which they were being smuggled went down, have told authorities that around 300 people had been locked in the hold.

So far, the many ships engaged in the rescue operation have succeeded only in recovering 28 survivors and 24 bodies.
