I’ve found Sai Mizzi’s office, but there’s no phone number listed

Isn’t it ironic? The information which our liberal and most transparent government of a European Union member state refuses to give to the press, to parliament, to the Opposition and to the public is published by the totalitarian Chinese on Shanghai’s foreign affairs website, in the consular list.

The news was reported yesterday that the Maltese government has spent two million euros on a “building” to be used as a consular office in Shanghai, but there was no mention of who the consul will be, though there was speculation about the Health and Energy Minister’s wife, Sai Mizzi.

But Shanghai’s official consular list, published on the internet, reveals that Mrs Konrad Mizzi has been registered as Malta’s consul in Shanghai since 5th September last year, and gives her office address, which is not a building but an 11th-floor ‘unit’.

Malta’s consular office is the only one listed without a telephone number – very useful for anybody who wishes to contact the consul.

The Opposition should get its act together on this and ask some pertinent questions in parliament. This is a cabinet minister’s wife we are talking about, and a consular office without telephone numbers on which people may contact the consul.

To say nothing, of course, of the fact that the government has lied to the press, to the Opposition and to the public by saying that Mrs Mizzi is in China on a contract from Malta Enterprise as a consultant to that state agency.
