Ivan Hallett was a new candidate on the Labour Party list for the Floriana local council elections. He has been elected.
In 2007, Hallett was fined almost Lm2,000 after being found guilty of the crime of obstructing customs officers, the police and VAT Department inspectors, lying to them, not showing them documentation, and refusing to allow them to open boxes of merchandise he had just imported from Sicily.
He also refused to divulge from whom he had received the merchandise.
The political party which Hallett now represents is the very same one which, in government, has promised the Chamber of Commerce (with which it has set up a company, most unusually) that it will tackle abusive movements of goods between Malta and Sicily.
Instead, it puts one such person on its party ticket.
