Bastjan Dalli’s concrete certified as UNSAFE back in 2007
Concrete supplied by Bastjan Dalli’s batching plant, Mixer Ltd, was certified as UNSAFE back in 2007 when the (Nationalist) government – through the Housing Authority – revoked a Lm1.3 million (around Eur3 million) contract to build 22 social housing flat and 29 garages in Floriana.
Government-appointed experts had certified the concrete work on the ceilings of the five-storey block as defective and unsafe. The Housing Authority then revoked the contract and issued a new call for tenders.
Bastjan Dalli said that the government’s actions – his brother John was not a minister at the time because he had been forced to resign in 2004 and was not reappointed until 2008 – were “abusive” and that he would sue for damages.
Two years later, he was caught conspiring to traffic cannabis in to Malta from Libya and was held in prison on remand after skipping bail to go to Libya and being arrested on his return.
