I have received this email from a Maltese man who told me “I have been in London for five years and have never received anything from the Malta High Commission. Then this – hilarious and very sad.”

A few minutes later, somebody else sent me the same email and remarked: “I think people should know who is representing them in the UK, the standard and type of correspondence that is released through official channels and ultimately how public funds are being spent.”

Dear friend,

Hello from all of us at the Malta High Commission in London. I hope this email finds you and all yours well.

You may have probably heard that this week is the “Eurovision Song Festival” week with semi-finals being held on the 19th and 21st May, while the final night will be on Saturday 23rd May.

Eurovision this year is being held in Vienna and all 3 nights may be viewed on BBC TV. Starting time of all three nights – for all of us here in the UK – will be at 8.00pm.

The two semi final nights – Tuesday 19th and Thursday 21st – will be screened on BBC 3 TV, while the final night will be broadcast on BBC 1 TV.

Malta will this year be competing with a beautiful composition titled “Warrior” which will be sung by one of Malta’s foremost female singers – AMBER. Hers will be the fifth song in the contest.

To qualify for the final night, Malta needs to be one of the 10 songs – out of 16 competing numbers – that manage to pass through the semi final. And this is where I would like to call on your patriotism and your love of Malta.

Although not participating in the semi finals, residents in the United Kingdom are entitled to vote for their favourite song during the semi final being held on Thursday 21st May – and this is the one in which MALTA will be competing.

Please allow me to repeat. To qualify for Saturday’s final night, Malta has to clear the Thursday hurdle. To put it in just 5 words – MALTA NEEDS THE UK VOTE !

Voting must only be done by telephone, land line and mobile, and the numbers to call will be announced during the transmission itself. Voters in the UK can choose either to call from their landline using the long (11-digit) number or from their mobile phones using the shorter code (7-digit) number.

In a nutshell :

Thursday 21st May – 8.00pm onwards – BBC 3 TV – Live from Vienna – Eurovision Song Festival 2nd Semi Final. MALTA competing with “Warrior” sung by Amber.

MALTA needs each and every one of your votes to qualify for the final on Saturday 23rd May.

That’s the first hurdle ! If we then make it to the Final, then please repeat Thursday’s procedure and once again cast your vote for MALTA.

Thank you, one and all, for your kind support,

Yours sincerely,

Norman
