The Malta Independent receives more information from DePaul University than it does from the government

The Malta Independent has written to DePaul University with several questions, and has received the following information promptly.

1. It is NOT setting up a campus in Malta.

2. It is NOT awarding degrees to the graduates of any outfit in Malta.

3. Its sole contact has been with Sadeen Education Investment Ltd.

4. Sadeen Education Investment Ltd contracted DePaul University to provide initial curriculum materials for five bachelor degrees, one MBA and four programmes at doctoral level.

5. Sadeen Education Investment Ltd submitted these to the Maltese accreditation authority four days ago, seeking a licence to operate the ‘American University of Malta’ first as an institute of higher education and later as a university.

6. DePaul University is willing to carry on providing “consultative academic support” in the form of “further program development, policies and academic structure development” but has not signed an agreement with Sadeen Education Investment Ltd. It is in negotiation.

7. DePaul University has not committed itself financially in any way – not to land, buildings, infrastructure or programmes.

8. DePaul University has no agreement with Sadeen Education Investment Ltd to provide its own faculty members or staff, nor will it be involved in hiring faculty members or staff for the American University of Malta.

9. DePaul University will not be involved in the American University of Malta’s operations.

10. DePaul University “has entertained no negotiation or discussion with the Maltese government in relation to the American University of Malta project”.

11. DePaul University “has no involvement nor responsibility nor authority nor knowledge related to the selection process for the site of the American University of Malta”.

12. DePaul University has authorised neither Sadeen Education Investment Ltd nor the American University of Malta to use its name. It has only authorised the use of the followingt statement: “academic programs were developed in collaboration with DePaul University.”
