The shift towards the undemocratic continues

The Labour Party continues to show that it is more comfortable doing business with the undemocratic. That’s probably because they don’t bother with frivolities like transparency and accountability, and baksheesh is normal.

Azerbaijan, China, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and now Qatar. This is beginning to look like something a whole lot more different than mere diversification of Malta’s economic and foreign policy basket, and a deliberate shift.

The Nationalist government negotiated the setting up of Lufthansa Technik – a station for the servicing of European planes. Joseph Muscat now talks about a helicopter base for Qatar.

There’s the difference. I know very many Maltese – certainly the whole of the Labour Party – are more comfortable with Middle Eastern values and tend to dislike democracy beyond the five-year parliamentary vote, but let’s not go down that road.
