Last week, on Thursday, Bank of Valletta chairman John Cassar White and deputy prime minister Louis Grech dined a deux at the ironically-named Caviar & Bull restaurant at the Corinthia in St Julian’s.

The person who saw them entered the restaurant at 8.45pm and found them already there. He left at 11pm and they were there still, with no sign of winding down to leave, “in what was clearly very engaging conversation”.

The Bank of Valletta is currently embroiled in a scandal in which it has given Electrogas Malta Ltd, a privately-owned company, a loan of 101 million euros, with the government standing as guarantor with a pledge of 88 million euros in public money, which will have to be paid if Electrogas defaults on the loan, in whole or in part.
