Head of state walks out of dinner after the first course
The evening before last, Din L-Art Helwa celebrated its 50th anniversary with a ‘grand celebration dinner’ under the patronage of Malta’s head of state.
Marie Louise Coleiro Preca gave a speech, sat down for the first course, and then promptly walked out, astounding the guests.
One of them emailed me: “Everyone here is shocked. Has she no idea what is and what isn’t permitted in civil society?”
My reply: “No. She wouldn’t think it any different to putting in an appearance at a political party coffee morning or turning up to a charity fundraiser for half an hour.”
Yes, Mrs Preca has a way with people and affects concern for their plight, but ultimately, H.A.M.A.L.L.I. United. She should have been given the job of looking after the Community Chest Fund, which appears to be her real interest and purpose, without being made head of state.
