Safe at last

Whatever your view about the flood of Syrian refugees pouring over the Hungarian border, pictures like this one put life into perspective.

All their worldly goods in a couple of plastic bags and a knapsack, having lost everything except each other, knowing that they will probably never see their homeland or most of their family again, homeless and with a toddler to raise, no work, no money, unable to speak the language, no idea whether they will be granted permission to stay – a present and a future that looks to us bleaker than bleak – and they are smiling with happiness because they have made it over the border, because they are safe at last.
