Ex Labour MEP Claudette Abela Baldacchino, who failed to be returned to the European Parliament last year, has been put on the public payroll at €32,000 a year, as “adviser on EU affairs” to Michael Farrugia, Minister for the Family and Social Policy. Minister Farrugia described this as a position of trust.
The information has been given in parliament in response to a question put by Opposition MP Kristy Debono.
Abela Baldacchino was investigated by the European Commission and faces criminal action for cheating on expenses. She used to fly economy class, claim reimbursements for business/club class flights, and pocket the difference over several years. The funds allegedly stolen in this manner were quite significant.
