An informed source has told me that the Prime Minister and Mrs Muscat have not been paying for her parents’ residential care at the private care home, Villa Messina, and that the government is footing the bill.

The government has for some years had an arrangement with various private care homes in which it pays for places in extreme cases where it cannot accommodate people at St Vincent de Paule because of lack of space, but these individuals have been abandoned by their families.

The prime minister and Mrs Muscat, my source said, abusively took up two of these places for Mr and Mrs Tanti, Mrs Muscat’s parents, soon after he became prime minister.

Mrs Tanti died a few weeks ago, but Mr Tanti remains at Villa Messina, with his hefty bills there paid not by his daughter and her husband, but by the government which her husband leads.
