Opposition leader pledges to repeal criminal defamation laws

The correct verb there is actually ‘will’ and not ‘would’. The use of ‘would’ not only weakens the effect of the pledge and undermines it, but is also wrong. ‘Would’ is the conditional, which makes Busuttil’s pledge to repeal the criminal defamation laws dependent on something other than being elected to government.
Great news, though – really good. And it puts the liberal progressiveness of this government into its proper perspective. It wants all the liberal freedoms except the very ones which civilised democracy treasures most dearly.
