Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to the World Tourism Organisation calls journalist “that floor-rag”

It goes without saying that it doesn’t bother me what this obese and corrupt octogenarian, who most certainly wasn’t appointed on the basis of meritocracy, says.

I remember him when he was one of Dom Mintoff’s cabinet ministers in the late 1970s and 1980s, punching the side of a lorry on which he stood behind his Great Maoist Leader as he addressed the usual rabble. And he was the worst hamallu of the lot – not even Lorry Sant behaved like a BNP football hooligan and proper savage on those lorries. But Joe Grima did.

The fact that he is still around, resurrected by Joseph Muscat from the dustbin of history along with the rest of the living (barely) detritus, stands testament to all that is wrong not with politicians but with the social culture and mentality of the people of Malta.

We are our own worst enemies.

No, what this obese old savage with one foot in the grave says doesn’t bother me at all. What bothers me is the fact that it doesn’t bother the prime minister. It tells me in how much contempt he holds Malta and its institutions.

The prime minister’s special envoy to the World Tourism Organisation has packed his Facebook page with disparaging remarks and offensive jokes about the Opposition leader. This is not simply “expressing your opinion”. Because of his particular official position, far from being democratic it is actually the opposite: anti-democratic and repressive.

That this should have to be explained in 21st-century Malta is truly tragic.
