Amateur drivers using their family cars – what about the insurance coverage, too?

I have just received this email from somebody I know, in response to this post.

I can confirm that an acquaintance of mine is acting as a CHOGM driver using her son’s car. This was arranged some weeks ago already, not as a last minute panic solution. I hope this information is helpful.

Somebody else I know told me that yes, ordinary people have been contracted to act as drivers of their own private cars, and that they are being paid 25 euros an hour. Aside from the fact that these are not trained drivers when they are supposed to be security drivers, they have not been told to inform their insurers and adjust cover for their car.

Their ordinary private-car policy will not cover them if an accident happens while they are using it as a leased car. It does not cover them in the restricted areas of the airport, either.
