“So this is how liberty dies: to thunderous applause”

Joseph Muscat announced at a public meeting today that Malta will continue to stay out of the Schengen area even after the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting has come and gone. His announcement was greeted with great applause, bringing to mind the famous scene from Star Wars.

His government suspended Malta’s participation in the Schengen area at the start of this month, justifying it as necessary for the migration summit and the Commonwealth meeting. The suspension was meant to be lifted at the end of this week.
