Muscat government to back Turkey’s EU membership bid. So where does that leave Jeffrey Pullicino?
Joseph Muscat has said that his government will back Turkey’s EU membership bid.
The Nationalist government supported Turkey’s EU membership bid. It was one of the reasons that Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando fell out with Gonzi and his government. He thinks Turks are not European – because you know how it is, he and Peppa ta’ Mawtu and Il-Qoccu In-Nittien tas-Siggiewi are European but Turks are not.
Pullicino Orlando then went to war with Foreign Minister Tonio Borg and PM Lawrence Gonzi, demanding that Malta’s support of the Turkey’s EU membership bid be discussed formally in parliament, and declaring that he is totally and absolutely opposed to Turkey joining the EU because Europe would end up over-run by Turks (because that is somehow a bad thing).
He then declared himself all out in favour of Israel joining the European Union because he considers Israelis to be European, unlike those Turks.
So now I understand why Pullicino Orlando, seemingly out of the blue more than a week ago, resurrected the matter of how he ‘supported’ a Labour Opposition motion against Richard Cachia Caruana on the matter of support for Turkey’s EU membership bid (that wasn’t the real reason at all, not for the motion and certainly not for Pullicino Orlando’s support for it, when I am given to understand that he was the one who suggested the motion to the Labour Opposition in the first place).
A week ago, his Facebook comment (see below) seemed erratically meaningless and out of context. Given what Muscat said the day before yesterday, we have more perspective on why he wrote that.
And doesn’t this just expose more of the hypocrisy and falseness of that Muscat outfit – in Opposition, they bring a motion in parliament supposedly motivated by anger at support for Turkey’s EU membership bid. Then when they are in government themselves, they announce their support for Turkey’s EU membership bid. And that Jeffrey’s jumping.
