The opening bars of the Marseillaise in this video of Francois Hollande’s New Year message remind me about something I should have mentioned earlier: it was completely wrong and inappropriate for Joseph Muscat to appropriate the national anthem for his New Year message.

The national anthem is for the head of state and not for the head of government. Hollande is the president of France, its head of state.
