Last year, Panama was added to the European Commission’s blacklist
Last June, the European Commission added Panama to its blacklist of countries designated as tax havens because of their lack of support for anti-tax fraud and evasion efforts.
Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said at the time: “Our citizens can no longer tolerate that certain companies, often the most prosperous, avoid fair tax contributions and that certain tax regimes encourage them on this path.”
Meanwhile, unbeknown to the Maltese electorate, the Maltese parliament, the Maltese government, the Malta Labour Party and the European Commission, a minister of the government of an EU member state – Konrad Mizzi in Malta – had incorporated an asset-holding company in that very jurisdiction.
You will notice that I didn’t say ‘unbeknown to the Maltese Prime Minister’.
