Of course the Prime Minister isn’t going to renew Sai Mizzi Liang’s lucrative contract

Sai Mizzi Liang’s contract with the government of Malta was due to be renewed today. But last night HER HUSBAND, not her boss (the Foreign Minister? the Malta Enterprise chief?) or her Minister (Chris Cardona) said that she would not be seeking renewal of her contract and that she would serve out her remaining term, until August.

Konrad Mizzi said: “I discussed it with my wife and we decided that it would not be appropriate for her to carry on, especially given my increased responsibilities in the government.”

I knew this would happen. Two days ago, when the big news about the Panama company broke, I explained that knowledge of the company is almost certainly the leverage Sai Mizzi Liang is using to extract what she wants from her husband and his Prime Minister. And the way the Prime Minister acceded to her demands can only mean that he was fully aware of the Panama company and was worried that she would blow their cover out of spite or anger if she didn’t get what she demanded.

But now the basis for her blackmail – let’s call it leverage – disappeared overnight the day before yesterday when her husband was trapped into blowing his own cover on the New Zealand trust and this website informed the public about his Panama company a few hours later.

Now that the whole country knows, Mrs Mizzi can’t hold a gun to their head anymore. So they have no reason to renew her contract. It’s not as though she’s been doing any work for it anyway, and her engagement and pay have caused the government untold damage for two and a half years.

Just to put things into perspective for you: Sai Mizzi Liang left for China permanently just a few weeks after her husband incorporated his company in Panama.

Oh, and while Konrad Mizzi told journalists last night that her contract will not be renewed, he didn’t tell say whether she’s staying on permanently in China. And what do you know, NOBODY asked. Of course she’s staying. Husbands do not settle their earthly goods on their wives and children by means of a trust when they’re still in their 30s and not suffering from terminal illness. I think we should be able to work out that he settled his mysterious assets on her and the children by means of a trust, out of the blue last year, because it’s now well and truly over. And just as she had leverage on him through knowledge of the Panama company to get what she wants to move to Shanghai, when things got really bad she could easily have used the same leverage to acquire the Panama company and its holdings for herself and her children.
