You know an election is approaching when they start talking about “people who are hurt”

Who are all these ‘hurt people’? Give them a bandage and a couple of Panadols. Really, what an island. It’s the mentality of a village in Puglia in 1955. ‘Hurt’ just means somebody who wanted a favour or special treatment and didn’t get it. Of course, when they see others getting favours and special treatment, it just makes them feel more ‘hurt’.
You and I might be upset at the corruption, but they just see others getting the special treatment they wanted – and they’re upset because of that, and not because of the cronyism and corruption and the fact that this place is like southern Italy just after the war in its mentality.
