You know they’re going down when they resort to desperate measures

I wonder what the ambassadors of other EU member states think as they watch a press conference in which the Minister of the Economy, inexplicably accompanied by a former Nationalist Party councillor, gives three press conferences in as many days about the height of the deputy Opposition leader’s house and now, the size of his swimming-pool.

Even if Chris Cardona were the Minister for Planning, this would be horrendous, let alone when he is not. The government of a democratic country does not target Opposition leaders in this manner. The ministers of a serious and democratic government do not call press conferences about the size of swimming-pools – if there is a breach, the government is expected to proceed through the institutions, starting with the Planning Authority for which it is responsible, and not call a press conference demanding that the Planning Authority acts, when it is the government itself.

The government must be in truly dire straits if it has resorted to countering the massive Panamagate scandal and the huge embarrassment of Toni Abela’s rejection with three press conferences about the deputy Opposition leader’s house, fronted by the sleaziest minister in the cabinet, who spends all his spare time and some of his office hours as well at the Stable bar, Level 22, Hugo’s Lounge, Hugo’s Terrace, Silvan Fenech’s Portomaso shag-pad and now, a Swieqi penthouse leased out in the name of Henley & Partners.

What does this tell us? That no other member of the cabinet would do it, and that no member of the Labour Party would sit with Chris Cardona so they had to resort to a former PN councillor with a reject problem.

You have got to be insane and desperate to try to use the deputy Opposition leader’s swimming-pool to obscure a cabinet minister’s secret company in Panama, the Prime Minister’s chief of staff’s secret companies in Panama and the British Virgin Islands, and the massive problems that have now been engendered by Toni Abela’s catastrophic failure a few days ago.
