Owen Bonnici positions himself to take over the Labour deputy leadership from Louis Grech
It is clear from Owen Bonnici’s behaviour, his defence of the Prime Minister’s behaviour and that of his chief of staff and favourite minister (in the face of the silence of his other cabinet colleagues), and the fact that the Prime Minister has just put Identity Malta in his portfolio, that Owen Bonnici is positioning himself or being positioned to take over the other deputy leader post from Louis Grech, who is old, tired and ill (and lazy).

As a side-note, I should mention that he talks about his passionate love for his daughter, and how he become aware of his responsibilities and decided to go into politics when she was born. But then, as it transpired not longer after that interview, becoming involved in politics turned out to be the direct cause of his leaving his daughter for a Labour Party apparatchik.
