TOP COMMENT/Toni Abela’s potato-shaped theatrics

Toni Abela’s performance is pretty good by Maltese standards. All the devices he employed are part of the standard Maltese repertoire: the theatrical facial expressions in lieu of words, the nifsijiet tat-telenovelas to indicate contempt for a question, the familiarity, the laghqizmu, the name-dropping, the personal relationship with the Prince of Malta, the laughing away the Southern Mediterranean peasant behaviour, the assumption that because one is Maltese, one must be totally unsophisticated, the pride in one’s low breeding, the catastrophic accent, the “heqq”, the notion of “political beliefs”, the notion of criticism as treason, the bullshit about how audit reports (yawn) are “inspiring” (laghqizmu), the bullshit about political careers as some kind of martyrdom for the people, the hand on the breastbone to highlight one’s deep and Southern Mediterranean passion, and the general potato-shaped theatrics.
