A MALTESE MINISTER

Maltese officials already have a track record in Brussels. John Dalli, a former Foreign Minister of Malta and then European Commissioner for Health (2010-2012), was embroiled in a lobbying scandal involving the tobacco industry. He was forced to resign.

Panama Papers now brings into focus a government minister of Malta – Konrad Mizzi, Minister of Health and Energy. Shortly after being appointed minister in 2013, Mizzi set up an offshore company called Hearnville in Panama. In 2015 he set up an offshore trust in New Zealand, as the shareholder in the Panama company. The registered beneficiaries are his wife, who is Malta’s consul in Shanghai, and two children.

What does this Maltese Minister say to this? “I have no money in the company. I am having it audited. There is no secret bank account.” He added that the company in Panama will be dissolved immediately after the audit.
