Mifsud: if he’s not fit to be governor, he’s not fit to be deputy governor

To avoid what looked to be the inevitable rejection, Alfred Mifsud released a statement late yesterday afternoon saying:

This is to confirm that I have informed the Hon. Prime Minister that I do no wish to be considered any further for the post of Governor of the Central Bank of Malta.

Nikkonferma li nfurmajt lil Onor Prim Ministru li ma nixtieqx nigi kkunsidrat izjed ghal kariga ta’ Gvernatur tal-Bank Centrali.

If he waited until he was formally rejected, then the inevitable would follow: he would also have to resign from his position as deputy governor.

What he has done here is make it look voluntary, as though it was his decision, so it is fine if he stays on as deputy governor.

But no, it is not fine. If he is unfit to be governor (and that much has been established already) then he is also unfit to be deputy governor.

It is the Prime Minister, in consultation with the President, who can remove him. But will he?
