Can there be any clearer evidence than this result that democracy without education will throw up disastrous results? Older people in Britain, like older people in Malta, in their overwhelming majority left formal education at 15 or even younger. Most of my generation (born 1964) left formal education at 15 or 16 – those of us who went to sixth form were in a tiny minority of a few hundreds and then only a fraction of those carried on to university.
