Read this: the voice of common sense in a sea of fascist-influenced thinking
All this rabid talk about “the will of the people” and “the people have decided” is horrific precisely because it is fascist-influenced. But you need to know about the socio-political evolution of Europe in the 20th century to see that, you have to know what fascism really is beyond a caricature of Hitler and Mussolini, and many people don’t.
Democracy isn’t “the will of the people”. God forbid that it were, because the pure, unadulterated “will of the people” leads to the opposite of democracy and the subjugation of others and erosion of their rights. Besides, of course, economic and social mayhem.
Democracy is a lot more complicated than “the will of the people”. The first mistake was that the matter of Britain’s continued membership of the European Union was put to a referendum vote in the first place, to be decided upon by vast armies of millions of utterly clueless people with strange grudges, odd ideas and no qualms about sacrificing the livelihoods of legions of people.
The second mistake will be to think that the consequences of the first mistake should not be redressed. When deciding how to act in a bad situation, the choice must always fall on the least harmful option. What is the least harmful option in this very bad situation: pulling Britain out of the European Union on the basis of a non-binding referendum outcome, or taking the common sense route explained here?
