    The Italians are very superstitious and DO use the horn sign to ward off the evil eye. The “throwing of horns” practised by heavy metal fans has nothing to do with invoking the devil. It was started by the late Ronnie James Dio, whose Italian grandmother had a habit of throwing horns to ward off the evil eye. He called it “maloik” which is probably a corruption of “mal’occhio”
