Germany’s Vice-Chancellor has said that EU member states should offer citizenship to young British people who are in the country already, so as to allow them to continue life as citizens of the European Union.

Sigmar Gabriel said that the other 27 member states of the European Union should not “pull up the drawbridge” for young Britons, who largely voted to remain, and so should consider offering them citizenship.

The Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi already said last week that EU member states are considering whether British students at universities on their territory could be offered citizenship. Renzi said he is “sad” for the younger generation of British people.
