VICE News: Turkey’s civil uprising of May/June 2013
The first thing that will strike you when watching this VICE News documentary about the Taksim Square uprising of three years ago is the complete and utter contrast – in type of person, clothing and gender – between these thousands of Turkish people protesting against Erdogan’s rule three years ago, and the one-kind-of-man-only shows of support for Erdogan after the failed coup of three days ago.
The second thing that will strike you is that the European Union and the United States spoke too soon when it rushed to speak out against the coup and in support of “Turkey’s democratically-elected government”. It was another failure of language, words and meaning. A democratically-elected government and a democratic government are not the same thing.
But do watch this video – the VICE News channel is all-round excellent, I find.
