Joanne Spiteri (formerly Bugeja), whose father is a brother to TVM’s head of news, Reno Bugeja, has been appointed CEO of the Broadcasting Authority, the regulatory body whose duties mainly involve ensuring that TVM maintains party-based political balance in its news reporting and current affairs programming. Both of those fall under the direct responsibility of the new CEO’s uncle.

Ms Spiteri replaces former sports reporter Pierre Cassar, who resigned some months ago, reportedly after failing to see eye to eye with Broadcasting Authority chairman Tanya Borg Cardona.

Ms Spiteri, who worked part-time at TVM for a few years, is a first cousin to Labour Party candidate Chris Cilia, whose mother is a sister to her father and to Reno Bugeja. She is married to a committed Labour activist.
