Reading this helps clear up some confusion about what’s considered normal in a western democracy and what is not. Living in Malta, especially now, can lead to some problems working out the difference.
We’ve only had around 50 years of democracy and it’s been a struggle ever since. So a few good reminders like these – that it’s not all about a vote in general elections – are useful.
The things we consider minor or of no significance – the Prime Minister and his aides insulting and targeting newspapers and journalists or protestors, for example – are actually ‘terrifying’ in a democracy. Political leaders and aides mixing their business interests and those of their cronies with government affairs? Ditto.
