BREAKING/Government has renewed Sai Mizzi’s contract – Minister lied to the public

The government of Malta has renewed Sai Mizzi Liang’s contract and she will remain in Shanghai as a representative of Malta Enterprise. Her original contract, which she entered into with Malta Enterprise in August 2013, expired in August last year. Her husband, Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi, said in February last year, when he was elected deputy leader of the Labour Party, that when her contract expired in the summer, she “would transition into the private sector”.

“Sai and I have discussed this and we feel that (her post) is not compatible with my position as deputy leader of the party,” he said.

A month later, Mizzi was replaced as deputy leader by Chris Cardona, who is currently at the centre of a scandal of his own.

Earlier today I received information from sources close to Malta Enterprise but not actually at that organisation that Sai Mizzi remains on the payroll there, her terms and conditions unchanged. This afternoon I rang William Wait, chairman of Malta Enterprise, and asked him to confirm this, which he did.

“There was a call for applications to fill the post, and we had a lot of interest. There were many applications,” he said. “Then her contract was renewed.” I asked him to specify whether it was renewed under the same terms and conditions, and he said that it was. “I am not sure when it was renewed exactly,” he said, “but I believe it was in the last quarter of 2016.”

Over the last couple of days, Sai Mizzi’s continued listing under the Maltese consulate in Shanghai has been the subject of much discussion, the story having been revived by David Thake on his Radio 101 show and picked up by the Times of Malta this morning. The trouble is that they’re all directing their queries to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, when we knew that her contract was signed not with that Ministry but with Malta Enterprise. The Minister responsible for Sai Mizzi is not George Vella but Chris Cardona, the Minister for the Economy.
