The destruction of a Mediterranean island by greed, corruption, bogans and aesthetic disasters
I have had a look at the agreement which Konrad Mizzi, representing the government of Malta, reached with the business operation led by Silvio Debono, a backer of the Labour Party. It is shocking – as you would expect, given that the presence of Konrad Mizzi on a government deal means that Muscat and Schembri have wheeled him out to front the corruption.
But more about that later, as right now I have people looking at it more closely.
For this post, I’ll just concentrate on how anybody could think this is a good and appropriate choice of land use on a tiny Mediterranean island, and on one of the smallest and busiest bays, the only sandy one on the Sliema side of Malta.
Apart from the total, utter, complete bogan aesthetics and Dubai-style offensiveness of this structure, what shocks most is the failure of some people to understand that this is not how you improve a Mediterranean island, but how you destroy it. The people who are actually involved, on the government/Labour Party side and in the business itself just don’t care, because all they are after is the money.
But the rest of us should care. This, dear readers, is exactly how corruption destroys a country.
