The threat to democracy, Minister, is in the Police Commissioner’s failure to act on the report

The Home Affairs Minister, a man whose ‘persons of trust’ seem to spend their time fixing state-funded jobs for each other’s children, has said that the Opposition leader is a “threat to democracy” for demanding that the government publishes the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit’s report of the investigation into Konrad Mizzi’s and Keith Schembri’s affairs.

He’s right that the law precludes the report from being published, but calling for its publication is clearly a publicity stunt designed to draw attention to the fact that the government refuses to act on it.

The report was handed to Police Commissioner Michael Cassar together with a request for prosecution, but Cassar chose to take leave of absence from work instead, citing health reasons, and then he resigned. His successor, Lawrence Cutajar, a man noted for his very public admiration, on Facebook, of the Prime Minister’s balls, has probably binned it already. This would not be because of fear of the consequences if he does go ahead and prosecute, but because he will not prosecute men he admires politically.
