The Commissioner of Police, Lawrence ‘Lorry’ Cutajar, and Mario Azzopardi, who is chief of staff to the Economy Minister, Chris Cardona, and also his partner in a building development company, are first cousins. Their mothers are sisters.

The Prime Minister handpicked Lawrence Cutajar to replace Michael Cassar, when Cassar resigned shortly after being presented, by the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit, with a request for the prosecution of Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri, among others.

Cutajar as not acted on that request either, and both he and the Prime Minister have refused to answer direct questions on the matter, with the Prime Minister saying that “it’s up to the Police Commissioner” to decide whether somebody should be prosecuted or not.
