There is no ‘group’. There is no ‘group CEO’. There is only Silvio Debono.

I am fascinated by the way people in Malta are confused and mystified by the nature of companies. Why do they find them so perplexing? Yes, a company has its own legal personality at law, but ultimately, it is owned by somebody. And when a company is owned by just the one person, it is not ‘the company’ which is acting, but the person. You can stop talking about the company and just talk about the person.

The media and politicians shouldn’t allow people to hide behind company names. They should speak about the company shareholders, because company names mean nothing. Right now we are being blinded with a lot of bollocks about “DB San Gorg Property Ltd” – the company set up last September to gobble up a third of St George’s Bay with the help of its little friends Joseph, Keith and Konrad.

But DB San Gorg Property Ltd has only one shareholder, SD Holdings Ltd. And SD Holdings Ltd is solely owned by Silvio Debono in his personal capacity.

In other words, Silvio Debono – he, and he alone, with nobody else, not even a business partner, son or daughter – will own that very large tract of extremely valuable public land and everything built on it.

Do you understand exactly what we are talking about here?
